Rotation Reflection

This rotation was the most intense so far, but I learned a lot. In my first rotation in OBGYN I was in the operating room for C-sections, but this rotation made me much more comfortable being in the OR. Additionally, this exposure helped me learn how an OR operates. I also saw robotic and laparoscopic cases, not just open cases, which was really enlightening. I knew that there are robotic surgical cases, but I did not know exactly what that meant.

Besides from the operating room, this rotation also made me extremely familiar with surgical management. I worked in several clinics including the breast, breast oncology, surgical oncology, vascular, and colorectal clinics. This experience made me very familiar with how patients are examined and worked up pre-operatively. Additionally, I provided wound care to patients admitted on the surgical floor. I had not had experiences with wound care prior to this rotation, and after this rotation I feel extremely confident in providing wound care to a variety of different wounds. I also sutured and placed a nasogastric tube for the first time during this rotation.

All in all, I feel that this rotation not only gave me fantastic operating room exposure, but also taught me surgical management and hands on experience on wound care, nasogastric tube placement, suturing, and assisting in the OR.
